Tough decisions abound in the mountains: Keep going or turn around' Couloir jump-turning or open-face ripping' Volkl's V-Werks BMT 109 ski won't stop these dilemmas from dogging you, but with a featherweight construction and full-blown freeride pedigree, it'll at least mean you won't have to choose between torn hip flexors and downhill terror anymore. Constructed with a multi-layer wood core bundled up inside a stiff carbon-fiber jacket, the BMT 109 weighs in at under eight pounds a pair, helping it cruise up the skintrack in a way you never thought was possible. That being said, you can rest assured it's got plenty of Volkl's aggressive DNA to slay any conditions you hit on the way down. Poplar in the tails and tips gives the ski unapologetic energy, while sturdy ash underfoot lends confidence-inspiring stability when things take a turn towards choppy chunder. A fully rockered shape complements the wood core, floating through deep bowls eagerly, as the tapered tips make it easier to throw your skis sideways and skid out loose, surfy turns. At 109mm underfoot, the BMT (Big-Mountain Touring, if you were wondering) makes a pretty strong case for its versatility. Sitting in the sweet spot between all-pow and all-mountain, 109mm is wide enough to float through fluff but slim enough to maintain an edge on alpine hardpack and the occasional frontside groomer. Short sidewalls save weight, and Volkl's Ice. Off topsheet helps prevent ice and snow from building up and weighing you down. To make pre-dawn mornings at the trailhead simpler, Volkl made sure to include a Skin Pin at the tip and a flat notch at the tail so you can slap your skins on and start the climb without any drama.
