It's hard to ignore the fact that the bike industry has been churning out a new class of discipline-bending, do-it-all trail and enduro machines with fewer limitations than ever. Fast climbs, cushy descents, and everything in between are par for the course for these new unshakeable monsters. If you're going to be riding one, it deserves the right set of boots to best put its abilities on display, and Maxxis' Tomahawk 3C/EXO/TR Tire aims to be that pair of boots. Designed to succeed throughout a huge range of all-mountain rowdiness, the Tomahawk is an aggressive, adaptable tire begging to earn a spot on the shuttle for your next ride. Equipping a tire to roll quickly on straightaways and corner without skidding out generally means knobs with a slightly lower center profile paired with more aggressive sidewall knobs. Maxxis took this strategy to the extreme on the Tomahawk, giving it center tread that looks like it's been flattened with a hammer, towered over by a set of squared-off side knobs eager to latch onto the trail on loose switchbacks. This drastic combination results in a tire that's as well prepared to fly over the flats as it is to barrel down rock-encrusted descents, with the added reassurance of Maxxis' EXO protection warding off flats. The triple compound, or 3C Maxx Terra, construction Maxxis uses gives the tire the consistency to back up the knobs' highly specialized positioning; harder rubber along the center softens to suppler material on the sidewalls for confident cornering and speedy fire road transitions.
