Giro's reintroduction of laces into the elite cycling shoe ranks reshuffled the industry and sparked a slew of copycat designs, making laces once again a common sight at weekend group rides and races alike. And while we're solidly on the "fan" side of the lace discussion, many riders are hesitant to sacrifice on-the-fly adjustment capability. With that in mind, Giro's Sentrie Techlace Shoes mark a new generation of shoes that meld the three most common closure systems into a highly adjustable harmony. Launching as the more affordable, yet absolutely race-worthy cousin of the Factor Techlace, the Sentrie Techlace blends Boa's L6 dial with Giro's new Techlace closure, which provide the light, supple feel of laces with the quick adjustability of hook-and-loop straps. The Sentrie Techlace is one of the first Giro shoes to feature a Boa dial, which Giro uses to anchor the shoe at the top with 1mm adjustment intervals to perfectly dial in the fit. The rest of the shoe is secured by two hook-and-loop straps that are in turn anchored by laces for a secure fit at a lower weight than traditional straps. There will undoubtedly be a chorus of traditionalists lamenting the combination as unnecessary complication, but we heard similar critique of laces when the Empire fist launched, and now it's impossible to imagine a group ride or race without at least one pair in the bunch.Giro employs a lightweight, breathable, bonded and welded upper with heel and toe reinforcement adding an extra dose of durability against errant scuffs and scratches. Inside, a Super Natural Fit Kit allows three different levels of arch support to help alleviate hot spots and discomfort caused by metatarsal pressure. And last, but not least, the upper is attached to Easton's EC70 carbon composite sole, praised for both its low weight and ability to transfer power directly to the pedals.
