Cumberland Island National Seashore is an awe-inspiring place like no other island on the East Coast. Gnarled live oak trees weave a dense canopy over a head-high palmetto jungle. Wild horses roam freely across the dunes. Preserved Victorian mansions balance the ruins of the Carnegie family's famed Dungeness. The humble First African Baptist Church where John F. Kennedy Jr. was married stands on the remote northern end of the island. Let REI show you the treasures of Cumberland on this unique bikepacking adventure! Riders can expect to cover 15-25 miles of flat terrain over the course of the trip. You'll carry all your own camping equipment clothes and snacks on your personal bike using special bikepacking bags provided by REI. While on the island we'll visit Plum Orchard Mansion and tour through life on Cumberland Island at the turn of the 20th century. We'll camp near the northern end of the island at a small backcountry site overlooking the intercoastal waterway for some amazing sunsets. We'll also visit The Settlement where Gullah-speaking people preserved their West African culture. At the end of the trip we'll head back to the south end of the island for some beach riding and to check out the Dungeness ruins along with more wild horses. REI guides will take care of all the reservations on the island ferry tickets and food preparation. All necessary bike and camping equipment will be provided. All you need is your camera and sense of adventure!
