We don't always make the best decisions, line-wise; however, we do often make one eminently commendable decision: taking the Bell Super DH Mips Limited Edition Helmet with us on our own runs. It's important to celebrate good decisions -- if for no other reason than to reinforce them -- that's why we partnered with Bell to produce this special edition of the Super DH Mips. We rely on it ourselves, so we're all too happy to add a little Competitive flair to the graphical treatment as an implicit endorsement. We'd never suggest that any protective can guarantee against injury, but popular assumptions about helmets are popular for a reason, and few gravity lids have the technical pedigree of the Super DH. Layer one to this multi-part sandwich is of course the classic helmet element of EPS foam mated to a polycarbonate shell. For years, this was the standard construction for bike helmets. That changes with the advent of Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS), though, and Bell incorporates the technology in a way that the brand claims is more effective than simply including it between a helmet and a head. Bell calls its tech MIPS Spherical, and it's built into the helmet between two different layers of foam, one of a higher-density EPS and one of lower-density EPP. This design allows for a ball-and-socket architecture that can move several millimeters in any direction in the case of impact. The progressive layering of variable EPS better manages the transfer of energies during certain impacts. Much like the other Bell Super helmets, the protective chin-bar attaches and removes easily with no tools required with a simple 3-step connection adding trail riding versatility. Whether the chinstrap is on or not, Bell designed this helmet to keep you cool on the hottest rides. The helmet has 19 vents with an additional four chin-bar vents and two brow ports.
