Engineered to integrate with current Shimano 11-speed mechanical drivetrains and frames and forks using the flat mount brake standard, this collection is offered individually as right and left Dual Control brake and shift levers since we all know a crash can affect only one lever, connected to pre-bled calipers. Shimano includes its well-regarded cables, OT-SP41 housing, and small fittings so you can get it installed quickly and be on the road. Prior to this R8020 offering, Shimano offered the RS685 brake/shifter setup that occupied a spot somewhere between Dura-Ace and Ultegra. It worked well, however, it lacked the refined action and ergonomics of an Ultegra or Dura-Ace series group. We loathe having a group on a bike that isn't all from the same group, so that's what gets us excited about R8020, that, and the host of improvements. The disc calipers receive technology from its mountain bike arm and get ceramic pistons and easy to access bleed ports. The new pistons help rid excess heat and work in conjunction with the included finned IceTech brake pads for superior cooling. Shimano's attention to heat management gives us complete confidence that the pads and braking system will continue to operate properly and consistently even on the longest, steepest descents. For the best results, Shimano recommends using its Ice Tech stainless-alloy clad disc rotors for the best modulation and least amount of brake fade. These rotors, sold separately are available in 140 and 160mm diameters to fit flat mount calipers with the appropriate Shimano adapter.
