Layering for early winter rides can be tricky, because it takes a balance of breathability and protection to get the ride just right. Layering for deep winter cycling is a no-brainer, though: protection is key, and everything else is secondary. The Giordana Men's Fusion Winter Jacket is among our top go-to items when the winter weather becomes as extreme as our spring and summer racing ambitions. We can't afford to miss those base miles, regardless of what the forecast has dialed up, so it helps us become an unstoppable force in the face of winter's immovable object. The Fusion Winter Jacket represents Giordana's most protective technologies but in a fit that's friendly to layering than the super-slim kit in the brand's AV line. It's made from a 3-layer, windproof, DWR-treated membrane that keeps the winter elements out of your body's microclimate. The inner face is brushed for low-loft insulation that warms without excessive bulk, leaving plenty of room to add base layers as the temperature falls to January levels. This is extreme protection, so it may be too much for hammering through autumnal hill repeats, but it does strike the ideal balance for long, low-intensity base miles in the depths of winter. The jacket is finished with an extended collar and three deep, open pockets. The outside pockets are both slanted for easier access while your sense of touch is impeded by windproof gloves, and an additional zippered pocket adds a secure storage option. While we touched briefly on the fit above, it's worth calling out again that--unlike Giordana's summer race kit--the Fusion Winter Jacket is cut with a fit that accommodates relatively heavy layering and a few extra holiday pounds.
