The big story of what gets us so enthused about Castelli's Body Paint 2. 0 Women's Shorts is what they don't have -- namely, seams. Rather than playing Frankenstein with multiple panels of different materials in different spots, Castelli uses a single, wrap-around piece of fabric that itself changes over the body of the shorts, making for a fit that all-but disappears in the saddle. The legs benefit from a dimpled, aerodynamic finish, strategic areas are built to promote breathability and wicking, and the entire, single-piece body provides gentle compression to reduce fatigue caused by road noise. The two spots where Castelli did opt for stitching make sense and seem -- for now, at least -- unavoidable: the waistband and chamois attachment points. The waistband is a swathe of keep-the-shorts-up material, which complements the lie-flat, integrated leg bands for a secure fit. The chamois is Castelli's Progetto X2 Air insert, which incorporates perforations and antimicrobial properties throughout its multi-density padding to protect against bumps in the road, moisture build-up, and bacteria.
