Leave it to the Italians to once again be at the Tete de la Course and provide the first 12-speed road group. Once the only groupset to consider if you were a serious road cyclist, Campagnolo has had some stiff competition from other brands in the past decade or so, but with this recent release of 12-speed drivetrain components, it aims to put the firm from Vicenza back on the wish list of discerning cyclists. At the heart of its 12-speed shifting is the Record 12 Rear Derailleur and thanks to its experience in working with race teams and years of extensive research and design, it offers not just an extra gear, but a drivetrain that brings enjoyment and performance to every ride. Campy didn't just create the new Record and Super Record group to add in an extra cog, although we do appreciate the wider range that it affords without having massive jumps between the sprockets, it took the opportunity to redesign the group entirely and build the best mechanical group it knew how to make. As such, it features 3D Embrace technology which places the 12-tooth pulley wheel closer to the bottom of the cog, increasing the chain engagement and management over rough roads and more precise and faster shifts. The derailleur's cage has also been engineered so one cage length works with both 12-speed cassettes offerings (11-29t and 11-32t). Its carbon-reinforced technopolymer upper body shaves grams without sacrificing strength while the parallelogram and cage plate made of carbon fiber maintain shifting rigidity. Campy's Ultra-Shift geometry reduces friction for smooth shifts across the cluster all while coming in at a more reasonable price than the Super Record while maintaining a near identical level of feel, though it does forgo some exotic material to keep the overall cost down at the expense of a few grams.
